Marrakech Bucket List: 15 Unique Things to Do in Marrakech

I fell in love wandering around the many narrow streets of Marrakech and appreciated that the city had traditional charm and a touch of modern flair. Although you need to still consider what to wear in Marrakech and cultural norms, it’s a bit more open to other ways of life.

1. Stay in a Riad

A riad is a conventional Moroccan house or palace that features an interior garden or courtyard. Many riads have been transformed into guest houses, providing visitors with a unique and authentic lodging option.

Staying in a riad offers you the opportunity to experience the traditional Moroccan lifestyle while enjoying modern amenities like air conditioning and Wi-Fi. Since most riads have a limited number of rooms, they provide a more intimate and personalized experience.

When choosing a riad, consider its location, amenities, and overall ambiance. Some riads are located in the heart of the medina, while others are situated in quieter areas outside the city walls. Some riads offer a rooftop terrace with breathtaking views of the city, while others feature a swimming pool or hammam (traditional Moroccan steam bath).

Some of the best riads in Marrakech include:

  • Riad Yasmine: This riad is situated in the center of the medina and boasts a stunning courtyard, rooftop terrace, and swimming pool.
  • Riad Jardin Secret: Located in a peaceful section of the medina, this riad features a verdant garden, rooftop terrace, and hammam.
  • Riad El Fenn: This opulent riad is positioned in the heart of the medina and showcases a rooftop terrace, swimming pool, and interiors filled with artwork.
  • Riad Be Marrakech: This Instagram-famous Riad is beyond picturesque and is known for its intricate tile work, beautiful courtyard pool, and extras like bookable cooking classes.
  • Riad Les Remparts De La Kasbah: We stayed at this riad and appreciated the warm hospitality, the interior decor, and its incredible location within walking distance of the medina.

If you’re up for splurging for an unforgettable stay in Marrakech, you may want to consider booking a room in La Mamounia. This is one of the most lavish riads in Marrakech and worthy of being on any travel bucket list!

This riad was actually featured in “Inventing Anna”, so if you’ve watched the Netflix show, you may already be familiar with it!

2. Get Lost in the Souks

The Marrakech souks are a complex network of narrow alleyways that are lined with shops selling a wide range of items, including spices, textiles, pottery, and jewelry.

As you wander through the vibrant marketplace, you will be immersed in the sights, sounds, and aromas of Marrakech.

When exploring the souks, it’s essential to be ready to negotiate with the vendors. Haggling is a common practice in Marrakech, and the vendors anticipate it. Don’t hesitate to bargain for the price of the goods you want to purchase, but always remain courteous and respectful in your dealings.

Taking a guided tour is one of the most effective ways to experience the souks. A local guide can assist you in navigating the intricate alleyways and offer insights into Marrakech’s history and culture. They can also assist you in finding the best deals and avoiding tourist traps, especially if it’s your first time visiting the city.

If you prefer to explore the souks on your own, make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring a map or GPS device. It’s easy to become disoriented in the souks, so be prepared to seek directions if necessary as sometimes maps aren’t 100% accurate.

3. Try the Street Food and Traditional Moroccan Dishes

If you’re an avid food lover, discovering the Marrakech food scene is a must-do experience.

The city offers a wide variety of street food options, ranging from savory to sweet and everything in between. Here are some of the street foods in Marrakech that you should definitely try:

Tagine

Tagine is an authentic Moroccan meal that is a must-try when exploring Marrakech. It is a slow-cooked stew that consists of meat, vegetables, and spices and is typically served with bread or couscous. You can find tagine at many street food stalls throughout the city.

B’ssara

B’ssara is a well-known Moroccan soup made with dried broad beans, olive oil, garlic, and cumin. It is usually served with bread and is an excellent option for a light lunch or snack.

Harira

Harira is a hearty soup that is prepared with lentils, chickpeas, tomatoes, and spices. It is a popular dish during Ramadan and is often served as a starter during iftar, but you will still be able to find it all over Marrakech year-round!

Moroccan pancakes (m’semen)

Moroccan pancakes, also known as m’semen or rghaif, are a popular street food in Marrakech. They are made with semolina flour and are usually served with honey or jam.

Fresh Juices

Marrakech is famous for its fresh juices, which are made with a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Some of the popular options include orange juice, pomegranate juice, and avocado juice.

As a tip, make sure to practice food safety while sampling the street food in Marrakech. Look for stalls that are busy and have a high turnover of food, and avoid any food that appears to have been sitting out for an extended period.

4. Take A Cooking Class

For an even more intimate experience with the local food, consider taking a Moroccan cooking class! Over the span of 3-4 hours, you’ll learn all about the fresh and fragrant ingredients often used in traditional Moroccan recipes while shopping for them in a traditional souk (market).

After shopping for fresh ingredients, you’ll learn all about how to use them and prepare a variety of traditional dishes. And when you’re all finished, you’ll get to enjoy your freshly prepared meals with a sit down dinner, fresh fruit, and of course, mint tea.

5. Pamper Yourself at a Traditional Hammam

One unique thing to do in Marrakech is to treat yourself to a hammam visit. A hammam is a traditional bathhouse common in many Islamic cultures that involves water and steam treatments dating back to the Romans.

And in Marrakech, hammams aren’t only relaxing, they are absolutely gorgeous.

Some fabulous hammams to consider in Marrakech include:

  • Le Bain De Kasbah: A traditional hammam offering high-value spa packages at reasonable rates with services like massages, mud wraps, and face masks.
  • Les Bains de Marrakech Morocco: A highly-reviewed hammam offering classic pamper packages that include massages, mud treatments, and more.
  • Spa at La Sultana: A luxurious spa in a hotel fit for royalty thanks to its many columns and variety of massage and skin care treatments. Those interested who are not guests must book in advance to secure a spot via email.

6. Enjoy a Nice Dinner and a Belly Dancing Show

Belly dancing has its origins in ancient Egypt and has long swept much of the Middle East as a traditional art form. Interestingly, belly dance never quite reached Morocco until somewhat recently.

So, although belly dancing is not traditionally Moroccan, it is growing in popularity as a fun thing to do in Marrakech. Often performed in a restaurant as people dine, a belly dance show is a unique way to spend an evening in Marrakech.

Here are some restaurants that offer belly dance shows:

  • Le Salama is a trendy restaurant in the heart of the medina with a beautiful rooftop that serves cocktails (rare in Morocco!) and puts on a belly dance show every night around 10 pm.
  • Palais Dar Soukkar is a place to go for fine dining that puts on various performances, not just belly dancing, between 8 pm and 2 am. It’s located a bit far outside the old part of the city.
  • Palais Jad Mahal is another fine dining establishment that serves upscale Moroccan dishes and offers dance performances around 10 pm nightly. It’s located just outside the old medina.

The intricate details of the Saadian Tombs

7. Check out the Saadian Tombs

The Saadian Tombs are a remarkable representation of the rich history and culture of Morocco and they’re a must-do on any Marrakech bucket list.

Discovered in 1917, the tombs were reconstructed to their original state in the 1970s. They were built in the late 16th century and designed as a final resting place for the Saadian dynasty.

The tombs are split into three primary sections, including the Hall of the Twelve Columns, the Chamber of the Three Niches, and the Hall of the Two Sisters. Each area is adorned with intricate carvings, colorful tiles, and beautiful arches.

The Saadian Tombs are well-known for their elaborate decoration, with the tombs themselves being adorned with intricate carvings and mosaics on the walls and ceilings, while the floors are made of marble and decorated with stunning patterns.

You can purchase your tickets in person, which cost 70 dh ($7 USD).

The Bahia Palace courtyard, which was crowded beyond belief

8. Take Pictures at the Bahia Palace

The Bahia Palace is one of the best photo spots in Marrakech and is very popular tourist spot in the city.

Constructed in the 19th century, this palace is a must-visit location for anyone exploring Marrakech and offers an excellent opportunity to take some stunning pictures aside from getting to explore the place, which is a must on any itinerary as well.

The palace is renowned for its intricate tile work, lush gardens, and magnificent architecture.

The central courtyard is one of the most popular spots for photos. It is surrounded by beautiful rooms and features a magnificent fountain in the center. You can capture pictures from any angle, and they will all turn out fantastic.

Another excellent location for photos is the harem. This section of the palace was reserved for the sultan’s wives and concubines and boasts intricate tile work and ornate details. Make sure to snap pictures of the elaborate doors and windows, as well as the stunning ceiling.

You can purchase your tickets in person, which cost 70 dh ($7 USD).

The gorgeous Garden Marjorelle

9. Explore Jardin Majorelle

Jardin Majorelle is a botanical garden that was designed by French painter Jacques Majorelle in the 1920s and is presently owned by the famous fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent.

This garden is home to more than 300 plant species from various parts of the world, including cacti, palm trees, and water lilies. The garden’s vibrant blue buildings and structures offer a striking contrast to the surrounding greenery.

Don’t forget to explore the Berber Museum, situated within the garden, which exhibits the history and culture of the indigenous Berber people of North Africa. The museum showcases traditional clothing, jewelry, and artifacts and it’s a wonderful place to dive deeper into the culture of the city.

Since Jardin Majorelle can become crowded, it’s advisable to arrive early in the morning to avoid the crowds. The garden also has a small café where you can enjoy a refreshing drink or a snack.

You must purchase your tickets online in advance as visits are at set times. Tickets to Jardin Majorelle cost 150 dh ($15 USD).

10. Have Dinner in the Agafay Desert

If you’re searching for a unique dining experience in Marrakech, plan a trip to the Agafay Desert for an unforgettable dinner under the stars!

The Agafay Desert, located just a short drive away from Marrakech, provides a breathtaking backdrop for a night of dining and entertainment. You’ll be collected from your hotel and transported to the desert, where you’ll be welcomed with a traditional Moroccan greeting.

As you settle in for the evening, you’ll be treated to a feast of Moroccan cuisine, including tagines, couscous, and grilled meats. The food is freshly cooked on-site, allowing you to savor the flavors of Morocco in an extraordinary setting.

Following your meal, relax and enjoy a traditional Berber performance. The music and dance will transport you to another era and place, making you feel like you’re in the heart of Morocco.

As the night comes to a close, take a moment to gaze up at the stars. The Agafay Desert is renowned for its clear skies, and you’ll have the opportunity to observe constellations and planets that you may have never seen before before you head back to Marrakech.

For those who’d like to spend more time soaking up the beauty of the desert, you can opt to take a full day trip to Agafay Desert.

11. Soar Above Marrakech on a Hot Air Balloon Ride

Soaring above the Marrakech in a hot air balloon is a great way to see the sights from a different perspective and an unforgettable item on your Marrakech bucket list!

In Marrakech, there are tons of companies that provide hot air balloon rides. Typically, the ride takes place early in the morning, just as the sun is rising. You’ll be picked up from your hotel and transported to the launch site, where you’ll meet your pilot and crew.

Once you’re in the air, you’ll be able to enjoy breathtaking views of the city and the surrounding countryside. You’ll also be able to spot the Atlas Mountains in the distance, as well as the numerous gardens and palaces that embellish the city.

The ride typically lasts for an hour, and you’ll have ample opportunities to capture photos and videos to commemorate the experience. Following the landing, most companies will serve you a traditional Berber breakfast, which includes mint tea and pancakes.

12. Cruise an ATV through the Palm Oasis

Outside of Marrakech, adrenaline seekers can embark on a Quad Tour the Palm Oasis. The Palm Oasis is a large stretch of land about 30 minutes outside of Marrakech, where sprawling date trees add a pop of green to the otherwise sandy desert landscape.

During your tour, you’ll have the chance to take photos, reach fast speeds, and witness traditional Berber villages, all while learning about Moroccan culture. After an exciting ride, enjoy a snack and a Moroccan tea break.

Essaouira, Morocco

13. Take a Day Trip to Essaouira

Essaouira is one of the easiest day trips from Marrakech and a great option if you want to explore the seaside of Morocco. This coastal town is known for its beautiful beaches, charming medina, and delicious seafood.

You can reach Essaouira by either renting a car or taking a bus. The bus journey takes roughly three hours and costs approximately 80 MAD (about $9 USD) per person for a round trip. If you prefer to rent a car, it will take you around 2.5 hours to reach your destination.

With that said, if you’re treating this as a day trip, I’d recommend you book a tour instead so you can make the most out of your time in the city. If you’re not a fan of guided tours, there are plenty of tour options that just include the round trip from Marrakech to Essaouira and back and will give you plenty of time to explore the town on your own.

Once you arrive, there are plenty of exciting things to do in Essaouira. The medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is filled with narrow streets, vibrant buildings, and local stores. You can also visit the Skala de la Ville, a historical fortification that offers stunning views of the ocean.

If you’re a seafood enthusiast, make sure to try some of the local specialties. Grilled sardines are a popular choice, and you can find them at many of the small restaurants near the port. You should also check out the fish market for a super local experience.

14. Witness the immense beauty of Ouzoud Waterfalls

Nestled in the small town of Tanaghmeilt, the Ouzoud Waterfalls are an impressive cascade that is worth the 2.5+ hour drive from Marrakech.

The falls reach heights of 330 feet and are the result of the El-Abid River pouring off the edge of an impressive gorge. Most visitors opt to go on a little hike and ride on a boat to the base of one of the cascades for a unique vantage point.

The region is also home to monkeys, argan trees and argan oil production, and jaw-dropping gorge views.

Taking an organized day tour is the easiest and most convenient way to visit Ouzoud Waterfalls.

sahara safari from Marrakech
The jaw-dropping dunes of the Sahara

15. Make the Long Journey to the Sahara Desert

Although not really a thing to do in Marrakech, embarking on a Sahara Desert Safari after you’ve soaked up the beauty of the Red City is a MUST! And it’s often one of the next stops for visitors in Morocco.

From Marrakech, the sweeping dunes of the Sahara’s Erg Chebbi are a 9+ car ride away. But trust me when I say it’s worth the long journey. Not only are you treated to breathtaking views along the way (I highly recommend a stop to see Ben Ait Haddou), but a once-in-a-lifetime bucket list attraction.

Spend the night (or two) in a luxe desert camp complete with sand boarding, camel rides, bonfires under infinite stars, and a chance to learn more about desert nomads who call the region home.

We stayed at the Original Desert Camp, and I highly, highly recommend it. Compared to the other camps we saw, it was a more intimate camp with only six luxury tents and was nestled perfectly between the dunes away from the others. Not to mention, the camp hosts were beyond hospitable and fun.

We booked our camp stay as part of our guided tour with Morocco Countryside Tours, who I also highly recommend for those interested in a guided tour of Morocco.

Bonus: Classic Things to do in Marrakech

Of course this is just the tip of the iceberg as to all the wonderful things to do and see in the red city! If you have more time to kill, here are other must dos:

  • Badi Palace Ruins, witness what remains of a 15th century royal palace and ancient tile work (70 dr)
  • Ibn Youssef Madrasa is a 16th century school with gorgeous architecture and a look into the education for those dedicated to the Quran (50 dr)
  • Rooftop hopping to places like Le Salama, Nomad, and more
  • Jemaa el-Fna Square, the heart of the Medina where you can find snake charmers, hawkers, and food carts
  • Koutoubia Mosque, one of the most important holy sites in the country dating back tot he 12th century
  • Le Jardin Secret, a charming botanical garden hidden away in the Medina with a cafe (80 dr)

Marrakech Bucket List: Conclusion

To sum up, Marrakech is a destination that caters to everyone no matter their travel style and interests.

The city offers an array of activities, including exploring the lively medina and sampling the delicious street food, taking a hot air balloon ride over the city, and spending a night in a traditional riad.

Regardless of whether you’re a history enthusiast, a food lover, or an adventure seeker, Marrakech’s cultural richness, striking architecture, and welcoming hospitality are guaranteed to provide a trip of a lifetime!
